Southern Research of Birmingham has announced that it will create 50 new jobs in Alabama following the sale of its Frederick, Md., Plant to Tonix Pharmaceuticals.

According to an announcement, the sale will allow the research organization to invest nearly $ 20 million in its Birmingham campus. Tonix will use the 48,000 square foot facility as a new research and development center.

Southern Research and Tonix have collaborated on a COVID vaccine that is currently in clinical trials. Their collaboration will continue, the company said, with Southern Research working on vaccines and antivirals at its Birmingham campus.

The two companies worked on TNX-1800, a live virus vaccine designed to protect against COVID-19, and TNX-801, a live virus vaccine designed to protect against smallpox and monkey pox.

“The sale of the Frederick facility is part of our strategic plan for the future of Southern Research,” said Josh Carpenter, President and CEO of Southern Research. “We plan to invest in new facilities in Birmingham and significantly expand our infectious disease capabilities to deal with current and emerging threats.”

Southern Research has carried out more than $ 30 million in research and development on COVID testing, treatment and vaccine development since the start of the pandemic last year.
