Mapping Projects

The Metropolitan Area Research Corporation (MARC) is a non-profit research and geographic information systems (GIS) – or data mapping – organization, with a client base that includes schools, universities, community groups, foundations and non-profits. Specializing in mapping variables related to socioeconomic, fiscal, land use and transportation data, MARC’s studies consistently stimulate new ways of looking at regional problems. MARC’s staff of skilled professionals has a wealth of GIS experience, and our small size allows us to offer personalized services at reasonable rates while still providing a high quality of professional service.

WHAT WE DO

Mapping of Metropolitan Regions

MARC maps the evolving patterns of fiscal inequality, social and racial separation, job creation, crime, public health, transportation, housing affordability, and regional growth, among other indicators. In so doing, MARC makes use of city, school district, county, state, federal and a variety of private databases. MARC's analysis has revealed the emergence of different types of central cities and several distinct categories of suburbs, each of which face very different futures. MARC's maps are often at the center of regional decision-making.

Mapping of Local Communities

For local governments, community development corporations and others interested in the needs of cities, MARC provides maps at a more detailed level of geography, including neighborhoods, tracts, blocks, parcels, and commercial locations. For example, MARC can create a GIS database of property and tax information, crime statistics, commercial development, social service locations, and land use. Once the GIS is developed, MARC works with the client to provide easy access to the maps and database from the Internet.

Data Analysis

MARC's team of researchers with backgrounds and expertise in planning, public policy, and municipal finance provide professional analysis of the data and maps. MARC's study of local fiscal capacity, social changes, and development patterns examines the effect of socioeconomic trends on the quality of life for the region. MARC also recommends areas of policy reform to help address the concerns identified through the data analysis and mapping process.

Full-Color Reports

MARC creates reports in an attractive booklet format complete with photos, tables, and MARC's GIS maps. Engaging and readable, these reports initiate dialogue, raise awareness about issues of socioeconomic disparity and sprawl, and build support for policy change. The booklets can be inexpensively produced in bulk, making them dynamic tools for public education and outreach.

HOW TO INITIATE A PROJECT

MARC studies are often produced in collaboration with local organizations seeking reforms in land-use planning, affordable housing or local tax policies, state and regional revenue sharing and regional decision-making. All over the country, MARC’s partners have been successful in using our data, maps and analysis to build support for a variety of policy reforms.
